情報化社会の進展により日常生活に必要となる情報量の急激な増大が続いており，大容量の情報記憶装置への期待が高まっている。従来はコンピュータ用を主とした書換型の大容量情報記録装置の大部分をハードディスク装置が担ってきたが，DVDの出現により大容量化に対する光ディスク装置の大きなポテンシャルが認識され，更なる大容量化に向けた技術開発が活発化している。本稿ではこの光ディスク装置の大容量化に向けての技術動向について述べる。
In the advanced information age, even to lead an everyday life, a large amount of data must be handled. In the past, most of the data, especially in the computer-peripheral arena, are stored in hard disk drives. With the advent of DVD, promising potential of optical disk drives has been widely recognized, and many innovative technologies to increase the recording density have been proposed. In this paper, some of these trends are introduced.
