We present an overview of MPEG-7 standardization activities. MPEG-7 is planned to reach International Standard status towards the end of year 2001. We discuss its scope, requirements, applications as well as its current work. We also explain how MPEG-7 responds to the desire of finding, filtering and browsing audiovisual information in the most efficient way, and enables a new generation of information appliances.
MPEG-7国際標準化活動の概要について述べる。MPEG-7会合は，2001年末に国際標準化規格として採用されることを目指し，活動が進められている。その活動の中で議論されている技術の範囲，要求事項，応用，現在の取り組み状況について説明する。又，MPEG-7会合で議論されている技術を使って，いかに効率的にAV情報を，フィルタリング，あるいは，ブラウジングし，いかに効率的に望む情報を見つけることができるか，そして，新世代の情報家電機器にいかに役立つ技術であるかを説明する。
