21世紀を取り巻くモバイル環境，特にインフラ，ブロードバンド，ワイヤレス通信の急激な進化から，個人の仕事と生活をサポートするモバイルツールも大きな変化を要求されている。
このような中，モバイルツールの１つであるザウルスはこの進化に対応し，ユーザの要求と潜在ニーズに応える為に，柔軟さとオープンさを備え，世界のデベロッパーの支持を得ているLinux(R)JavaTMを新しいプラットフォームとして採用し，最初のコンシューマ商品として，2002年3月に米国，ヨーロッパ向けに発売したザウルスSL-5500に，この新しいプラットフォームを搭載した。モバイルツールのプラットフォームとして，更に技術開発と磨きをかける為に，世界のデベロッパーや同じ方向を目指すメーカや研究機関と協力し，世界的なスタンダードプラットフォーム化を行い，ユーザに役に立つザウルスを始めとするモバイルツールの創出を目指す。
本稿では，ザウルスが目指す統一プラットフォームの現状と今後について解説する。
The rapid progress in mobile computing environments at the turn of the
century, especially in broadband/wireless communication, has made drastic
change inevitable in mobile devices that support people's business and
personal lives.
Sharp's approach was to adopt the combination of Linux(R) and JavaTM as
a new platform to better respond to current/potential user needs as they
are gaining popularity among developers worldwide for their flexibility
and openness.
The first such consumer product, Zaurus SL-5500 was launched March 2002
in the U.S and European markets.
Sharp intends to create new mobile devices that will even better satisfy
user needs, collaborating with developers, vendors and research institutions
worldwide who back the platform as the next global standard.
This paper describes the status quo and the future of the unified platform,
which Sharp aims to establish with Zaurus.
