今後のデジタル情報家電および環境・健康家電の進展を概説した後，これらの進展を支える最近のデバイス技術について考察する。現在社会を人間社会，自然界，デジタル世界の３つに大別し，それぞれの世界の間に位置する境界領域や，デジタル世界内でデジタル・システム同士の間に位置する境界領域で活躍するデバイスについて検討した。最近開発された新規デバイスと今後2010年にかけて重要性が増大すると予測されるデバイス技術について述べ，最後に本デバイス特集号で取り上げた各論文や新製品紹介の位置付けを説明する。
　
　After giving an outline of the progresses in the consumer electronics appliances for the digital information world, the environment, and the human health, I will describe some emerging device technologies leading to these progresses. It is possible to consider that our life is surrounded with the three worlds, i.e. human society, environment (nature), and the digital information world. Here, I would like to focus our discussions on the devices which function in the interface regions among these worlds or between a couple of digital systems.
