電化製品は様々な使い方に対応して多機能化が進み多くの報知音が使用されてきている。家庭で日常的に複数の電化製品を使用しているユーザにとって，同質の電子音による報知は，どの機器が何を知らせているのか識別しにくかったり，不快に感じることが多い。また，本格的な高齢社会に対応して，高齢者の使用に配慮した製品が社会的にも強く要望されるようになってきた。
そこで，報知音を電化製品共通の用途で分類し，用途別に意味を感じることのできる音を製作し，ユーザ評価実験をくり返しながら「誰にでも分かりやすく快い報知音」の開発を行い，96年以来業界に先駆けて電子レンジや洗濯機に継続して搭載してきた。本稿では，その開発プロセスと製品に応用する際の基本となるガイドラインについて紹介する。
Modern electric appliances must fulfill complex missions and duly notify us through electronic beeps that sound more or less similar. Since there are many courteous beepers in the house, it often gets chaotic and annoying when we cannot understand the reporter or meaning immediately. The general public requests appliances that they are more cultured and friendlier for senior consumers.
We started to develop an appliance sound system first by thumb nailing appliance messages and then by allocating stock or new composition, to be validated by monitor boards. Finally, monitor boards validated this appliance sound system. First commercial implementation took place in 1996 on MW Ovens and Washers as aimed at mild and clear advice to senior consumers. We outline our development process of the sound system and guidelines for its implementation.
