2003年12月に三大都市圏で開始された地上デジタル放送とフラットテレビの普及という二つの流れは一つにまとまって，新しいデジタルテレビとして受け止められている。
アナログ放送は2011年で終了する予定であるが，円滑な移行のために，その間はアナログとデジタルの同時放送（サイマル放送）が行われる。また，デジタルコンテンツの権利保護の目的で，原則「１回だけ録画可能」のコピー制御信号がデジタル放送波に加えられる。
デジタル放送では，ゴーストの無いハイビジョン映像を楽しむことができ，またインターネット経由でのデータ放送も可能になるが，更にホームサーバやITの活用で新たなサービスが期待できる。
A new digital television system is emerging as two trends are accepted among customers. One is the digital terrestrial TV broadcasting started in three metropolitan areas in December 2003 and the other is the wide-spread notice of "flat display TV receiver."
The analog signals will be simultaneously broadcast in the transition period until 2011. On the digital signals, copy control signal "Copy Once" is incorporated in principle to protect the copyrights of digital contents.
Digital broadcasting provides the ghostless Hi-Vision image and allows data broadcasting via internet. It is also expected to create advanced information services through combination of home-server and/or IT.
