近年，急速に発展してきた移動体通信の現況と今後のパーソナルモバイル端末の課題，及び端末要素技術について述べる。通信の命題は「いつでも，どこでも，誰でも，誰とでも，何でも」であるが，移動体通信分野の音声に限れば，ある程度充足した状況にあると言える。しかしより使いやすいパーソナルモバイル端末を実現するためには音声だけでなくテキスト・画像・映像等メディアの拡大が鍵となる。端末性能としては更に小型化，軽量化，長時間通話，ユーザフレンドリーなヒューマンインタフェースの革新性が要求される。その基盤となる低消費電力技術，入出力技術，ソフトウェア技術については長足の進歩を遂げることが期待される。
This paper describes the present situation of rapidly advancing mobile communication, the future problem of communication terminal, and several elementary technologies in the future.“Whenever, wherever, whoever, whomever, and whatever to communicate” is the ideals of communication. Voice communication satisfies almost all of these requirements.
In order to make useful personal mobile communicator, key is to integrate media with not only voice but also text, image, video and so on. The demands for the next communicator are smaller size, lighter weight, longer operation time, and easier operation of human-interface. The basic technologies for the next communicator such as low power consumption technology, input/output technology, and software technology are expected to make rapid progress.
